A Poor Baby With A Distended Belly From Air Swallowing Found Answers

When something’s wrong with your baby and you aren’t getting answers, it’s terrifying. That’s exactly what happened to this poor little one and her family. Babies are so complex and it’s truly hard to figure out where to turn and who to go to sometimes.

I’m happy to share this story, not only to guide parents but other lactation consultants too.

Sucking In Too Much Air Can Causes Tons of Problems For Breastfeeding Babies

This sweet little one had been rushed to the hospital for evaluation with no answers given. Her mother was desperate and looking for answers and learned of my lactation services in Boise.

Babe presented with severe stomach distension and in extreme pain. When watching the baby feed, it was obvious that she was swallowing a lot of air during breastfeeding.  There were tons of clicking noises and gulping. Keep in mind, this can also happen with bottle feeding.

This causes babies to be very gassy and fussy.  This poor little one suffered more from these symptoms than any baby I had seen.

After assessment, I found she had a tongue tie. I discussed with the mother and decided a release was our best chance to help her baby.

Within days of her tongue tie release her distension and fussiness were completely resolved.  That was all it was!

I see air-swallowing babies all the time in my clinic.  Some seem hardly bothered by it while others are fussy, spitting up, and gassy. Those who choose to do a tongue tie release almost always see improvement if not complete resolution of symptoms.
